Introduction

"Furious activity is no substitute for understanding."

Everything should be made as simple as possible, but no simpler. -- Albert Einstein

The tips and tricks we are going to talk about fall into three categories:

  1. Good old fashion keystroke counting -- the fewer keys you have to press (or less 'mousing' around) the quicker you can get the job done

  2. "I didn't know about that feature/aspect/facility." -- learning what tools are available to work with

  3. "I never looked at it that way before." -- working smarter, not harder

General approach:

  • Increase your surfing comfort level: The browser programmer wasn't trying to make your life miserable. Maybe understanding how he thought you'd used his program will help.

  • Learn more by sharing what you already know with others: I can't emphasize this enough. Once you've found a solution to something that puzzled you for a long time, share it with others. Conversely, if a task is difficult or the process awkward, ask around. Maybe someone else has discovered a better way.

This page has evolved over time to incorporate new tips and tricks as new browsers arrive. This edition anticipates that you are using either Netscape 4.7 or Internet Explorer 5.0 on Windows NT. There may be slight variations for MAC OS and Windows 98 systems, but the basic functionality should be available.

Each section of the series is fairly independent. You can peruse them in any order.
